In the aftermath of the conflict that split his world apart, most believe he has come to Masaq' to bring home Chel's most brilliant star and self-exiled dissident, the honored Composer Ziller. Also journeying to Masaq' is Major Quilan, an emissary from the war-ravaged world of Chel. There it will fall upon Masaq's 50 billion inhabitants, gathered to commemorate the deaths of the innocent and to reflect, if only for a moment, on what some call the Culture's own complicity in the terrible event. Now, eight hundred years later, light from the first explosion is about to reach the Masaq' Orbital, home to the Culture's most adventurous and decadent souls. They were attacks of incredible proportion - gigadeathcrimes. The Twin Novae battle had been one of the last of the Idiran war, and one of the most horrific: desperate to avert their inevitable defeat, the Idirans had induced not one but two suns to explode, snuffing out worlds and biospheres teeming with sentient life.

The incident is the point at which the two male characters are first brought together and one of them completely misinterprets what's taking place. The various people arrive, take hold of the balloon's ropes but are unable to keep it under control and there is a dreadful accident. In this, the story starts with an accident, where a group of disparate people come together to try and hold a hot air balloon on the ground after the pilot miscalculates. I think I'm going to space hos books out, too many at once could lead to increasing instability. It's very clever, it's also rather unsettling. In this, the seeds are planted mid way through that what Joe is saying might not be true, he might be seeing things, he might be the one with the mental instability. IN Amsterdam you're left wondering if there is a mastermind at work, pulling all the strings. In Atonement, he did the whole rip the carpet out from under your feet in the last chapter trick. He writes very different stories, but in all of them you are left with a nagging sensation that there's something that's not been said, that there is more to this that you've been told. I think I've worked out what McEwan's "thing" might be. She is fascinated by her visitors, but fears that he will either be put off by her snakes – all of which have names and distinct personalities – or else fall victim to the curse which has been placed on Medusa by the goddess Athena that harm will come to any man wholooks upon her. While her sisters are out on their daily explorations of the local area, Medusa watches a boy come ashore with his own dog. This version of the story opens with Medusa living in exile on a remote island with her sisters and her dog. In this version of the story, told from Medusa’s point of view rather than from that of Perseus, and using the Greek names in spite of borrowing heavily from Ovid, Medusa is the only Gorgon with snakes for hair, while her sisters, Stheno and Euryale, are the only members of the trio to have wings. I also appreciate a well-illustrated novel or novella, so this book was enticing on all counts, though I suspect it would work even better in print than it does as in electronic formats. I mostly prefer Greek mythology over the Roman versions of the same stories, in spite of studying Latin at school. I’m always keen to read retellings of myths, legends, and fairy tales, especially ones that place a feminist slant on stories that might originally have read as misogynistic. My goal in this is to read as many of the sequels and variations of Pride and Prejudice that are out there. I always wish that Jane Austen had written more about them, but since that isn’t the case, I go for the next best thing. Darcy are, in my opinion, the best couple in all of literature. Ever since I read Pride and Prejudice a few years back, I have been a little bit obsessed with the story and characters.
